In Memory of Squeek

We had two love birds--Pip & Squeek, About a month or so ago, we lost Squeek rather suddenly. We have no idea why--although we do have 13 suspects. Squeek was rather a quiet bird. She stayed mainly in her house, coming out only to drink or eat. If you tried to lift the lid of her house, she would try to peck your fingers. Pip is now alone, and is rather happy to say the least. Maybe he was pecked at by Squeek also, who knows?!? He chatters all day long now, and gets very excited when the kids all gather around in the room. Being a love bird and all, we worried about him being lonely. Amazingly enough, he seems content to be alone.

Those boys of mine, let Pip out of his cage and into my house plant!

Trusting our Feelings

With all the changes in our family lives the past nine month we have come to realize the importance of listening and trusting that still small voice within. That voice that directs our thoughts, and our actions. I once wondered what it would be like to feel inspired to do something, just like in the stories we often read in the Ensign. I never thought I would ever experience something like that. Last March we felt that inspiration and trusted what we were feeling.... it directed us to do something that would not only change our own lives, but many others as well. We loved and welcomed 5 more children into our family. In the beginning this was not an easy task, due to their past history. But we have been constantly reminded by friends and family that "it wasn't going to be easy--but it will be worth it". We have kept positive, and moving forward. In May, when things began to surface with these children, we decided to trust our feelings, and continue with the guidance we had felt and were being given; we obtained temporary custody of these 5 children. It was worth it just to the the smiles on their faces and hear their comments! The past 9 months have had their ups and down most definitely. We are so very pleased with all the progress that has been made with the children--they have much to overcome. All 15 of us have put for a huge effort to help our family continue to move forward, and progress for the better. These efforts are now paying off. Everyone is happy and healthy, what more could we want.
~~*~~*~~*~~
We have just received notice of an attempt to terminate our guardianship of the children. We are remaining constant to our inspiration that we felt 9 months ago. And will continue to move forward with our goals for everyone. We know the Lord's hand has been in this from the beginning. What is best for these children will happen. We are praying for His continued guidance in our families lives. The children are putting their trust in us, and in these things we are trusting in the Lord.

You must train your intuition -- you must trust the small voice inside you which tells you exactly what to say, what to decide.

Thanks to Everyone

We want to thank everyone who helped our family this year, especially at this Christmas Season. With financial burdens weighing us down a little this year, our family and friends stepped right in to help us out with gifts for the kids, food, etc. We are overwhelmed with the generosity, love, and caring that we have seen from our neighbors, community, and church. We feel so blessed to have you all as our friends. You have all helped to make our family have wonderful Christmas. You not only made our children smile with your gifts, but you have touched their hearts as well. They have learned a great lesson through your kindness--one they will always remember. We love you all, and can't thank you all enough.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Christmas from their Dad

Shannon, Joshua, Cassidy, Nathan, and Brenna also received in the mail today their gifts from their dad. They were a little late due to us not being able to receive our mail from the last snow storm which amounted to 2 feet of snow, and buried our mailbox. But non the less, they were just a excited to receive them today, and know that their dad thought of them. Shannon received a journal, make-up, and necklace and earrings.....which she grabbed Hannah and took it all right up to her bedroom to take it all in. Joshua received walkie-talkies, and journal. He gathered up the boys, and started playing spies around the house. Cassidy received a journal with pens, and a necklace and earrings.......she started writing right away; writing is her favorite thing to do. Nathan received a cowboy shirt with sheriff badge, and a train kit. The old shirt came flying off, the new one went on, and the hunt began for his cowboy hat. He gave the train to John to help him build later. Brenna received a learning alphabet toy, and a coloring book with markers which she opened right up so she could color Tinkerbell. You did a wonderful job picking out things the kids would like Brett. They all want me to write:
*~*
"Thank you for the presents Dad. "

Lana in New Hampshire

Lana, this is for you, from the all the kids. They went outside today to play, and came knocking on the door for us to see their creations. How cute is that?!?! They made Aunt Lana and her babies Tucker and Levi. Kind of funny..... notice that they even made Levi a little bit more filled out then Tucker. Aren't they the smart ones......lol! So there you have it Lana, you don't have to bring the twins out to see us now. We have you right in our front yard. And the best part is--you will be here all winter--YIPEE!!!
*~~*~~*
WE LOVE YOU LANA!

Thank you for the Cards

Thank you Grandma Susan, Lori & Lily, and Mandy for sending Shannon, Joshua, Cassidy, Nathan, and Brenna Christmas Cards. The kids were extremely excited to receive their Christmas Cards. They all had huge smiles on their faces, and were excited to finally hear from their Grandparents. Thank you for your thoughts and efforts--you made their day!

Christmas Morning 2008

Cookies and milk were set out for Santa the night before. He finally made it around to our house near 1 am. (He still had a bunch of wrapping to do!) Beside the kids were not all nestled and snug in their beds. From downstairs we heard talking and giggling, banging and bouncing. Christmas morning came non the less with lots of gifts. For breakfast he brought Cinnamon Spice Oatmeal, with Cinnamon sugar toast and 3 different kinds of fruit juice. Dad was still the last one to finish as usual. Animals were fed and all set for the day. Then we began. John passes one at a time....we watch that person open, and ooooh and aaaah over their gift. Let's just say the process is a whole afternoon affair. We were at it for nearly 4 hours. It was great.... no crying, no whining, no fighting. Everyone was anxious to clean up the wrappings to haul their loot to their rooms to play. It was rather a quiet afternoon for John and I, besides the "put batteries in please". We decided that Santa needs to bring 2 sets of batteries. One for Christmas Day, and another set for after that! We had a wonderful christmas together.

Wrapped In Love

Last night was our favorite activity of the week--Square Dance Lessons! Al even called a few dances to Christmas songs. We all gathered together while holding hands in a big circle, and sang Silent Night. "Just like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir" said Al while he smiled at me. (We are the only LDS people there.) Towards the end of the evening, they called our family up front. The whole group presented our family with gifts for Christmas. We feel very blessed to have so many friends and neighbors supporting our efforts and our family.

We let the kids open one of the gifts. They all received fleece blankets for their beds, or to watch TV. All of the kids are thrilled, and they totally love them. The kids have been wrapped up in their blankets all day. We want to thank our friends for the warmth of love, friendship, and blankets. You are truly loved and appreciated by our family. And hey, who knew that you could actually find 13 different colors of fleece in New England?!?

BSA-Troop 735

This is a photo of our wards Boy Scouts group. Hunter Gregory, the boy's best friend, earned his eagle last week. He is on the far right of the photo. This gathering was in his honor. I wish Isaac and Jacob could have been there in their little blue shirts as well. We are now proud to have 6 boy scouts in our house. We would like to tell Hunter-- Way to go! We are proud of you and your accomplishments. You are a great example to all they boys, and give them someone to look up to. Thank you!

A Christmas Carol

We have 4 tickets to the Flynn Theatre in Burlington, Vt to see A Christmas Carol. We are so excited!! We are having a girl's night out. Me, my friend Sally, Miss Shannon, and Miss Hannah are getting all dressed up to go out for some Christmas fun.
Nebraska Theatre Caravan's beautifully staged musical adaption of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol features a 30-member cast, live orchestra, elegant costumes, lively dancing, and show-stopping special effects. This beloved performance shares the tale of tight-fisted, middle-class merchant Ebenezer Scrooge, and ultimately teaches the timeless lesson that a greedy world can be healed by brotherhood and unselfishness. A Flynn holiday tradition for 22 years!

Winter Wonderland

I looked outside this morning and was quite stunned with all the glittery, sparkling ice on everything. It was beautiful. The sun, for once this month, was shiny so brightly; although it was not warm enough to melt anything. It was still nearly a mere 14 degrees out. The pictures do not do it justice...we could not capture the whole effect of the sight.I think the sight goes along with the song "Walkin' in a Winter Wonderland". In the lane, snow is glistening. A beautiful sight!!!
This was from the snow, and rain that iced up a few days ago. We were fortunate enough to keep our power, unlike the many thousands who lost it, and are still without. We are thankful.

Evening Story Time

Just another tradition in our house, that everyone enjoys. A couple times a week through out the month of December, we gather together around the dining room table.
We all listen intently while dipping our peppermint candy canes and sipping our hot chocolate with marshmallows.
Dad reads us Christmas story books, which have been gathered through out the years.Joshua over heard me say that I was going to pick up a box of candy canes while in town today. He asked all excited "Is John going to read us stories again?" A favorite memory for everyone.

It was Bound to Happen Sooner or Later

Well, it finally happened.....after a week of sledding, someone finally got hurt. I have been telling these kids all week, to "slow down", "don't sled on the side of the hill with the trees", "one at a time", etc. I think now they will take me a little more seriously. They all must think they are invincible or something!!! The older kids went out today after their schooling was done. About 15 minutes later, Elijah carries Isaac into the house crying and holding his ear. "It's bleeding." he says. Sure enough, once I moved his hand, blood ran everywhere. It took a good 5 minutes to control the bleeding. I decided I had better not try the super glue this time, so I snapped this picture, and took him into the hospital.
We were in the ER for about only an hour. They washed it up, numbed his ear with topical stuff, and used some Durabond to hold the laceration together. Too funny......I could have just done it myself.....but I was in doubt. Below is what it looks like now. It is really black and blue. Other then that, it looks really good.
I am happy it wasn't serious. But I am also a little glad that someone was hurt. Now the kids will maybe listen to me, and realize that what I am telling them to do, is for their own benefit, and not because I am being mean. Hopefully they will all be a little more careful.

What are we eating?

The kids ask 3 times a day......"What are we going to eat now?" People have been asking about what we fix the kids to eat, or what and how we cook for this many people. To tell the truth, I keep it simple. I fix what I know the kids will eat for sure, something that is rather quick, and very cost efficient. But all in all, meals are healthy and get the kids' tummies full. This morning, I looked at all those bowels on the table for breakfast in awe. I thought...not many people have the chance to make 15 meals, 3 times a day. So, here's the visual.
Today's breakfast was Honeycomb cereal. Breakfasts around here, rotates between scrambled eggs & ham, oatmeal, pancakes and cold cereal. We eat altogether at every meal times. We usually do pancakes on Saturday, but rarely ever toast. The time the last person gets their food, the first person's is cold, and it is very time consuming. Since majority rules in our house..cold cereal is definitely eaten the most.
Today's lunch was Turkey & Cheese Sandwich, chips, and a banana. Lunches are either meat & cheese or peanut butter with homemade jam sandwiches, roll-ups, mac & cheese, hot dogs, or fish sticks. Along with chips, and a fruit. Kid's mostly prefer Peanut butter and jam, but I try to sneak in something else before they have a chance to decide.
Tonight's dinner was Spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, and mixed fruit. Dinners consist of a variety of things. My favorite time to be a mom...........because I get to decide what we eat that night. Sometimes we have Spaghetti or other pasta of some shape or form, taco's, hamburg, rice, pizza, etc. Dinners always have a vegetable (usually salad), a fruit, and a bread. I love to cook in the crock pot also.....start it in the morning, smell it all day, then it is ready in the evening with no more thought! And best of all, dinner is followed by dessert, made by the younger cooks of the house.

I would love to invite you all over.......but let it be known that there are NEVER leftovers in our house. Me and John are lucky to get a small plate!

Gifts Under Our Tree

"The best of all gifts around any tree:
the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other."

"It's Beautiful!!!" says Brenna.

Christmas Tree Outing

Today we took the kids to Windy Ridge to pick out a tree. We have done this for a couple of years now. They have a tractor and wagon that takes everyone down to the tree farm. They dropped us off with a tag, and a saw. We all walked around for about a half of an hour searching for the perfect tree. It was Zachery's turn this year to do the honors of cutting it down. Then we hopped back in the wagon, and they take us back up to the shop. Meanwhile, they had a smaller tractor and wagon bring up our tree to wrap it. While we were waiting, they had hot chocolate, and applesauce donuts for everyone. We had a wonderful time. The kids all loved playing hide and seek in the trees, and running around. We will post our tree when we get it decorated.

Thank you Grandma Middie and Grandpa Frank

Tonight we let the kids open their first Christmas present.
They anticipated it all day, and were so excited.
They all loved their gifts, and everything fit perfectly.
We are anxious to have family pictures taken now. Thank you so much. We love you both, and miss you!

Having a Sweet Time Together

John was actually home tonight, so once again, we took advantage of the family being all together. Christmas time, in our home each year, brings lots of fun family traditions. Making gingerbread houses is one of these fun traditions that the kids all love and look forward to. Last year we enjoyed doing this with our Barnhart cousins. This year we are blessed to be able to do this activity with our Rollo cousins.
We now have 13 adorable little houses on our kitchen island--John says we are missing the town roads. Hmmm.......an idea for next year! The kids had alot of fun with this. They were all really creative in their architectural designs. No two were alike in any way, shape or form.
Tomorrow, after the big Christmas tree outing, they will enjoy the rewards of their efforts by eating them along with some hot chocolate.
*~~*
John and I make a larger gingerbread house to set up as decoration, along with a couple gumdrop trees for the the Holiday season. (Although, the green gumdrops always seem to disappear off the house........I am trying to be better at this each year though!)
*~~*
Pictures of all the kids and their beautiful houses are on the slide show.

Day Surgery

Me and Brenna spent our day at the Concord Hospital Day Surgery. She had quite a bit of dental work that needed to be taken care of. Brenna brought along her favorite blankie and little friend. She even asked the Doctor if he could check her bears teeth. (This of course was done after drinking the "silly juice"). Hmmm......we never did find out how many teeth the bear needed fixed, but Brenna on the other hand had 6 crowns put on her back molars. 2 molars had 2 large cavities on them each, which were also fixed. She now is at high risk for future decay, so we will definately be keeping up with her brushing. Considering all that was done, Brenna did a wonderful job through out it all. When she woke up, she rolled over and very quietly asked to be held. After a short while, she asked for a drink and then to go home. We are happy to have this finally done for her.

We have fish

On our little hobby farm, we have cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbit, cats, dogs, and love birds. According to the kids, the only things missing was fish. One day, on one of my outings, I found these cute little fish, that require no feeding. I brought them home to the kids. The orange fish is Oscar, and the cute little blue fish is Gus. They swim* in circles all day long.
* 2 AA batteries are required
Now, the kids are asking for a pony!!!

Jacob's Baptism

Today was Jacob's long awaited baptism. We are so proud of him. Jacob is now a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and proud of it. He anxiously awaited his gift of his very own set of scriptures all day. Jacob choose to sing his favorite songs of "I am a Child of God" and "I Love to see the Temple". He asked Isaac to talk about Baptism, and Sister Burkholder to talk about the Holy Ghost. Opening and closing prayers were give by brother Ross, and Joshua. Sister Cochran sang and played her guitar for Jacob, singing his favorite song once again of "I am a Child of God". It was beautiful.....I had tears in my eyes, as I looked around at all the children sitting around me. Realizing and pondering how each one is a special Child of God. John's and my responsibility right now, is to teach and guide them in order for them to return His presence. What an awesome task. I pray we are able to do this right. It was a beautiful baptism and confirmation. We had lots of friends attend in support of Jacob and his decision. He is still beaming ear to ear about the whole day. What a memory for him!

Happy Turkey Day

Proud of our Thanksgiving table set for 15.

Even our Orange Rolls turned out!

The day started out with John gettin' called in first thing this morning to do an Ultrasound in the operating room. Kind of a bumber, because he wasn't here to help. But hey, double pay!!! So me, Shannon, and Hannah sent the rest of the clan upstairs for the morning, then later outside for the afternoon. We spent the morning and early afternoon cooking, baking, mixing, etc. We had turkey, stuffing, yams, mashed potatoes & gravy, homemade cranberry sauce, homemade stuffing, orange rolls, beans, corn, cottage cheese jello salad, olives, spiced pumpkin mousse trifle, apple pie and ice cream. The girls put together cute little turkey cups with nuts and mints (a memory from my mom), and also corn rolls filled with little treats inside. Everything looked perfect, and the girl's were extremely happy with their results. The actual eating took about 30 min. Not much compared to the preparation, nor the clean-up after. But it all tasted wonderful. We were just happy to be altogether--or should I say thankful. After everyone sat around and we watched Rudolf the Red-Nose Reindeer. Sorry there aren't more pictures, the camera battery died.

The New Elton John

Zachery took this totally stilly picture of Elijah when he was playing the piano today. You don't often get Elijah to do something strange---so this is special!! Elijah started a year ago teaching himself to play. His idol would be Elton John. He has become quite good on this own. I would love to get him actually in some real lessons one day. He loves the piano, I can't hardly keep him off of it. He plays when he is happy, and he plays when he is in a mood. It is a comfort thing to him. Grandma Middie gave him an accordian a couple months back, and he is now picking right up on that also. He says if the house was to catch on fire, he would get the kids out first, them come back in for his piano............too funny!

Just Another Typical Day...

Today was a typical day here at our house. What is a typical day? Our days always start bright and early with kids ready to go first thing. They are dressed, beds made, rooms cleaned, and outside feeding their animals first thing and bringing in wood for the day. It is a rule that the kids have to feed the animals before they get fed. (You should see how fast my kids can do their chores!!!) Breakfast is next (this also is a quick event--the first ones are done before I even give the last kid their food!!) Inside jobs, as the kids call them, come next. Each of the 10 oldest children have one job they are to accomplish each morning such as floors, sweep, dishes, clothes, laundry, etc. The wonderful thing is, with that many kids doing jobs, they only have to do that particular job once a week. Jobs usually take us about 10 minutes. The little ones are so anxious to be big and get a job. I usually end up giving them each a baby wipe, and have them wipe down the fridge or the white door way trim, this being where all their cute little sticky hand prints show. After is school time. The little kids go upstairs are happy to have out a different bin of toys to play each day. They are pretty content doing this for a couple of hours, minus a squabble here and there. This is easily resolved with a quick yell upstairs to "play nice guys!" with all 3 replying "we are mom!" Morning school consists of Handwriting, Spelling, Math, and Language, and a timed Reading Comprehension. Monday's we have a word of the week (this week it is "vivacious"). A quick clean-up with the younger kids upstairs, and lunch is then begun. After lunch the younger school kids are on the computer doing their lessons, while the 3 little ones watch and pick up on a few things. In the meantime, the older kids are sent to their desks to do their History, Health, Science, and their map of the week. This usually takes an hour or so. After this they all get free time the rest of the day to do whatever they want. They usually play games, draw, or play Lego's etc. Or if it is nice out, they will go out and play (not as much anymore). Towards evening, animals need to be done once again, and then we double up with 2 kids in a room to straighten up a little before dinner. After dinner, they get ready for bed, quickly clean-up their room if needed, and brush teeth, etc. They know now to bring down their blankets, because they get to watch a short movie before bed. After the movie, or at 7:30 pm, whichever comes first, we gather for family prayer. Prayer is said, and songs are song (favorites include "As I Went Down to the River to Pray", "Book of Mormon Stories", and "Who Stole the Cookies From the Cookie Jar". A few times we have even went on a Bear Hunt!! We read the little kids a quick story, and at 8 pm it is off to bed for the younger group (under 8 years old). The older ones have an extra half an hour to stay down and talk with me about things that happened that day, or about the goings on of the next day. This is a fun time to find out their feelings about things, and get them involved with the family life. They seem to enjoy the older people talk! At 8:30 pm they are sent upstairs to read. It has been a tradition in are family since Elijah was just little to read each night for an hour. It has been happening for 11 years now. They are allowed to stay up till 9:30 pm if they are reading. If we hear goofing off, then lights are out early. They are usually really all good about it.........all the kids enjoy reading! Finally about 10 pm everyone is safely tucked away for the night. I get a few minutes to check email, clear tables, turn out lights, load the stoves, take some Advil, etc. before John gets home. Then I talk to him for a bit and fall asleep while thinking about doing it all over the next day. Now yes, we do alter our routine here and there, depending on activities.........but this is the typical day! Now you know what we do, and how we do it.

Brenna Marie

I took these of Brenna on Saturday. I promised Brett I would put them on, so he could see his little girl. She is getting big. She is just starting to fill out a little again, so we are expecting her to grow taller real soon. I love how blonde her hair is....she is a doll.

Busy, Busy, Busy

I got on today, and realized that it has been 2 weeks since we lasted posted anything. Wow, does time go by fast. We have been busy, busy, busy. Not a whole lot has happend. I tried to put on the most exciting things. The only thing worth mentioning was the kids' first real square dance. I didn't get any pictures of it.....but they had fun, and did a wonderful job. They actually a little ahead of all the other new beginners in the area. Because they are 'class' dances they won't have a chance to go to a dance again till January, but they are looking forward to this. Heck, they are already asking about when they will graduate......Graduation day is not 'till May!! Last Tuesday at our lessons, there was a local newspaper person there, that talked to the kids and took pictures. We will see what comes of that this week in the paper. Too funny!!
~*~
Today we went to our one and only appointment this week--yipee! That is a relief compared to the last couple of weeks. We are all excited to have the week together and to be home! I had a very good talk with DCYF today, alot of questions were answered that we have been wondering, and the counselors have been asking. Come what may now. We have done all we have been advised and felt we needed to do. "It is what it is"--my favorite saying.
~*~
We made our Thanksgiving List of foods tonight--we shall have a table full. (good thing we have the biggest table ever!!) I have my recipes, and me and the girls are ready to do some cookin'. This will be a fun Thanksgiving.
~*~
I will ttry to do better at the posting, now that things have calmed down.

Princess Hannah and Princess Cassidy

Once upon a time (Saturday to be exact), all the prettiest girls in the land (of Northern New England that is) were invited to Princess Sierra's enchanted castle to celebrate her 8th Birthday. Princess Hannah, and Princess Cassidy dressed in their finest dress and prepared themselves to have a ball. Preparation began with Princess Cassidy (after 2 long months of pleading and begging) getting her ears pierced. Next came the princesses baths, a little touch of blush, and a squirt of perfume, then the beautiful gowns, and lastly their priceless jewelry (Walmart specials!). Princess Hannah and Princess Cassidy looked as pretty as ever. They presented themselves on the front porch and did a couple twirls for us all to see. They were very pleased with our reactions. John started their chariot and they were off. When they returned........they were all full up to their ears, and had such tales to tell. They had fresh vegetables, and fruit, and little princess cakes. They made necklaces, and played musical chairs. All in all they had a wonderful time. Meanwhile, back in reality land, the rest of us stacked another 3 cords of firewood, before the freezing rain came.

Happy 13th Birthday Caleb

Two Friday's ago was Caleb's Birthday. But once again, since John was working, we waited till he was home to celebrate. The girls decorated the dining room yesterday while I made the traditional 13th birthday, 3 layer candy cake. He loved the little planner organizer the most. Caleb is easy to please and a joy to have around.

Quirky Habits Tag

I was tagged, as it is called, by my wife, Jenny.

Here is the TAG...List 6 quirky habits that you have... tag 6 quirky friends & link the person who tagged you.

1. When I shovel snow, I have a real had time knowing when to stop. I don't mean where, just when to stop. I can go over that same patch of driveway spot forever - smoothing it out just so. I am a perfectionist.

2. My paranoia is, when I go into a retail store I always feel like someone's going to think that I'm trying to steal stuff because I've picked it up to look at it, etc. Of course now with the detectors at the exit, I'm always thinking I'm going to set it off with that carton of eggs in my cart!

3. I can get pretty hung up on the details of anything. I would be perfectly content to take my paint brush and work on an area of wall about 2 feet square...all day, you know, just till I get it right. Another perfectionist moment!

4. Lists. I like to make lists. When I get free time at work I'll sit down and write a list - of whatever. then later I'll rewrite the list so that it's neater and more organized. The funny thing is I'll get home and won't even be able to find the list. did Jenny tell you that one of her favorite things to do is to throw away lists?

John couldn't think of anything else......so I will happily finish with a couple of his quirks......lol!!!

5. He always has to start a load of dishes and laundry right before we head out the door for church. Never fails...even though we are running 10-15 minutes late.....we always have to wait while he starts something else.

6. He always has a smart or sarcastic comment for nearly everything someone says or does. He is not nearly as bad as some of hs older brothers though....one in particular (Ben).

7. You say something to John, and he will start singing a song that has something to do what you said.

I better not mention anymore. He tags Stephanie (can you send us invite to your sites using our new mail please!!), and Bruce!

Quirky Habits Tag

I was tagged, as it is called, by my new friend Traci.

Here is the TAG...List 6 quirky habits that you have... tag 6 quirky friends & link the person who tagged you. Traci's blog is listed on the side of my blog page...check it out!

I have been thinking all night and day about this. I wish I had some really good and quirky thing I do, but I am afraid I am pretty normal and simply boring.

1. Ever since high school, I have been paranoid about someone messing my hair up. Do NOT touch the hair. Pretty silly because all I do is pull it up, it can't be messed up. And I will NOT go out in public or let my husband see me without my make up on or hair not done. Never have, that would be so embarrassing. And I always have to have my lipstick!!! I have like about 20. In the car, purse, jacket, coat, diaper bag, night table, bathroom, kitchen cupboard, in each car, etc. They are everywhere!!!

2. I absolutely love to pull teeth out. The kids run and hide when they find out that I know about their loose tooth. I like to get my fingernail and plop the tooth right out. I don't know why that is exciting to me.

3. I was happy to notice that there are quite a few people that have the same quirk as I do about popping things, like zits. I am absolutely terrible. I do it to my husband, and my boys. I don't understand it. It just looks like something that needs done, so I do it.

4. When I go to sleep, I have to have my pillows all around me (my husband hates this, the pillow that goes in between us he has officially named George now), my Indian blanket that I have had since I was little, and the fan HAS to be on for the noise. I have to lay on my stomach, slide down to the bottom of the bed, and hang from my shins down, off the bottom. That is really pathetic, now that I read it. But it is the way it HAS to be, or else I can't fall asleep!

5. I have a serious problem with sweets. I think we got it from my dad. When we were little, he would always have candy. We would give us a couple pieces out of each bag, but hardly any. So now that I am an adult.....that has turned into me. If I happen to buy a treat.....well OK, I can't only buy one treat.......I have to buy a few. I always have good intentions of sharing it with all the kids........but it never happens. I end up eating them all by myself. And worst part is, it is always gone the first day, sometimes even the first hour. I am so bad. The one good thing is that it definitely isn't chocolate......don't like the stuff!! This doesn't happen that often......maybe every couple of months. I am working on it.

6. Alright my boys said that I have to have everything with burgundy in it. It is true!! My kitchen is burgundy trim and burgundy apples, bathroom is burgundy, dining room, burgundy table cloth, with burgundy accents, house doors and shutters are burgundy, family room has burgundy accents and rug, living room has a burgundy rug and accents. OK, maybe it is overkill......every room in my house has burgundy. It has to all match and blend together doesn't it???!!!

OK.........I tag Lana, Kristy, Mike, John, Mark, and Beth (from Denver). I noticed you check in once in a while. I hope you don't mind.

Field Trip

Today Caleb and Hannah had an orthodontist appointment. So last minute we decided to bag school for the day, and take a Science field trip before the appointments. We went to the Montshire Museum in Norwich, VT. This is a very nice place to take kids to, lots of hands on activities for kids of all ages. (You should have seen all the older people there in their wheelchairs.) All the kids loved it. Elijah kind of threw a fit at first, and wanted to stay in the van. But as you can tell from the pictures, he did get into it after a while. We learned lots of new things, and had a fun day together. We came home with some fun new science things for our classroom also. The fun never ends!

Butchering Day

Saturday turned out to be our official butchering day I guess you could say. It started out with John, Elijah, Zachery and Caleb wrestling the 3 pigs, through the muck and guck, into the trailer in the morning. Our butcher came and took 2 away and the third one we took over to Vermont towards evening. Estimate weight was about 220 lbs. Not to bad, considering we rationed the food to a bag each day. Zachery then had the brilliant idea to butcher the ducks and a few chickens. The reasoning behind this, what so that he wanted to prove to me that he could do this, in order to get himself a knife. So I guess I have to at least think about it now, since he fullfilled his part of the deal. Below are pictures of the process, if'n you don't want to see the process, then don't click. Although it wasn't really all that gruesome; I thought it would be a lot worse. The kids were not around for the actual killing and bleeding out. But they did wonder around once in a while during the dipping, and plucking, etc. It didn't seem to bother them, which I am glad. Caleb and Hannah were the only two that stayed away completely. We are happy to have a few meals in the freezer, and to have gained the experience of learning to butcher. Check out the picture of the eggs from inside the chicken. Who would have known they were all clumped together....strange stuff!! Comments made by the kids were:
Willem: "That duck is dead, we better take it to the doctor."
Cassidy: "Why are you taking a picture of this!?!?!"
Elijah: "My legs feel wobbly and weak."
Brenna: "What's that mom? Oh, chicken?! I like chicken. Can we have that for dinner?"
Jacob & Joshua: "This is so cool."
Shannon: "I get the wishbone!"
I can't say I had much to do with the process. I am a whanny, I know. I would if I had to, but I don't, so I won't. John and Zachery did the job. I took over with putting a new router and wheel bearings on my van. Something I can handle!! lol Sorry Kristy, now you will never again eat chicken or duck, I know. I will be the reason for you becoming a vergetarian!!

Running on Empty

Thank goodness it is nearly Friday. I am so anxious for the weekend to be here. John will be home this Friday night, and I am ready for his back-up support. It has been a wild week, chalked full of appointments and activities. We have had 2 dentist appointments, 2 doctor appointments, boy scouts, cub scouts, young women's activity, 3 counseling appointments, had our pigs butchered, our sheep sheared, square dancing lessons, grocery shopping, and shoe shopping. And if there was anything else in between this, I have completely forgotten about it. This is just what I can remember off the top of my head. That's not including the daily cleaning, bathing, cooking, farm animals, and schooling. Thank goodness the youth combined activity was canceled due to expected rain; I am completely exhausted. People are always asking how I do it all. To tell you the truth, I don't think I do it all. Each night I am completely worn out, and am so happy to get in my bed. Each morning I silently think, "Here we go again!" Such terrible thoughts. I love all that I am able to do with the kids, and accomplish, but I very often wish I could do more, and had more energy. And then there is my poor van. It has about had it. Not only is it running on empty, but it's also now making quite a few new sounds. I am a little concerned worried about this. Right now, my van is so very important with all that is going on. Next week also brings the same: 4 doctor appointments, 2 orthodontist appointments, 4 counseling appointments, square dancing lessons, youth fireside, boy scouts, young women's activity, Sierra's birthday party, Merit badge college, Caleb's birthday, 1st real Square Dance, school, and all the rest of everyday life. So I am needing to refuel not only the van, but myself this weekend, with John's help, and prepare myself for another wild week ahead. Let it be known--I wouldn't have things any other way though!!

3 Big Pigs

This is for Leslie. I thought I would put this on the blog, since you said you check it on a continuous basis. Which I am guessing might be a good way to communicate with you, seeing that I am busy with kids and school all day and never have a chance to return your calls. Sorry about that!! Just keep telling yourself "Jenny is not ignoring me!" It will make you feel better. Anyway, these are our pigs.....I don't know which one is yours exactly. I guess at this point, it will be whichever one we can't catch on Friday (butchering day) and is left behind. I would go out with the tape measure and see how many inches they are around, so we know the approximate weight. But as you can tell by the muck in the pen........it might not be in my best interest to do so. I have a feeling I would be swallowed up by it. So they weigh what they weigh, at this point. I just want them in the freezer.

Happy Halloween

I have to admit Halloween isn't my favorite holiday. I totally adore the fall leaves, the scarecrows, apple cider and donuts, hayrides and such. Halloween to me is just a lot of thinking and work. I have been avoiding pulling out the costume bins all week; I knew it would cause chaos in the house. About noon I had all the kids do a quick clean up of the whole house, so at least it started out in order before it all began. About 1:00 I allowed the bins to come out of the attic. I can't even describe the scene to you........13 kids and costumes flying everywhere. What you picture in your mind right now, is exactly how it was!! They had to try them all on, even though they were too small, too big, totally girly, or rather boyish. It took me 4 hours (and I am not even being sarcastic!!) to have everyone settled with something they weren't going to cry about 5 minutes later. The ward had a small party up at church, the kids loved the Haunted House. We decided to head home a little early, so we missed the actual trunk-or-treat. We all decided it would be fun to have a family party at home instead with John tomorrow night, since he had to work tonight. We have done this other years, and the kids have all loved it.

A Sigh of Relief

Still a little chilly out today; snow slightly covering the ground. I think the slightest bit of sun would melt it all away. We started up the fires again, we will most likely keep them burning now till spring. It is a nice cozy feeling to have them up going. The kids enjoy pulling out the board games, or sinking down into the comfy couch with a good book about this time of year. We made it through another day of school. I even had Isaac and Joshua teach a lesson of History, Health, and Science to the younger kids today. They enjoyed this very much, especially teaching about bees, and why it is not a good idea to step on them. So the little kids have explained and told me to no longer kill the bees. Hmmm......we will see what they think of this idea next time there is a wasp in their bedroom. I am thinking they will have a change of heart. This afternoon I met with the counselors which whom Shannon, Joshusa, Cassidy and Nathan will be seeing. It was such a relief to have this finally happen, after trying and searching for the right ones for 6 months. They will be great for them.......they were so nice, and dealt with me just fine!! I explained to them just basic information about the kids, and what they are like and enjoy. It was a relief to also have them back up and affirm the observations we have seen. All in all, it is a huge stress off my mind. I feel a little more carefree. We now have the attorney to deal with the legal things, and the counselors to deal with the emotional things. And I can finally focus all my efforts back onto raising, guiding, teaching and caring for all the kids. No more worries--all is good! As dad would say "Happy Days!"

For John on our 17th Wedding Anniversary

What do I love about you?
From you that question came.
Apparently I don't tell you why,
And myself I have to blame.
*
So I feel that I should list,
Some qualities in you that I admire.
And put them down in written form,
To cure your deepest desire.
*
I hope you honestly like this,
Because they are all equally true,
I really want to tell you what,
I honestly love about you.
*
I love you for not only what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me. I love you for the part of me that you bring out. You give me the confidence to do anything I want to do. You appreciate the things I have done, and accomplished. Your encouragement helps me to make it through each day. You never give up on me, and that's what keeps me going. Your love brings out the best in me. You help me to reach my highest potential.
*
I love that you always say what I need to hear. I appreciate that, whatever mood I am in, you can always make me feel better and happier that I was before. Sometimes, even the way you look at me, or just having you by my side is enough to make my heart swell. Your love is patient and kind, and gives me faith and hope. Our love is perfect, even when we are not. You are perfect for me!
*
I love you because you give me the feeling, that the best times are still ahead. We have come to realize that being married can still be fun and exciting, just as when we were dating. This definitely thrills me. I look forward to growing old along with you, and enjoying each others company throughout the years. I honestly think the best is yet to be.
*
When I think of you, my heart is filled with the wonderful feeling of Love. The greatest joy of my life is falling in love with you. I realize that the love I feel for you,in my heart,is the best feeling to have in this whole world. I don't ever want to be without it. My heart is over flowing with love for you.
*
You and me, we're a perfect match! I love that we go so well together. I think we are the perfect couple. We enjoy very much the same things, whether relaxing, or working. And I love how we are able to complete each others thoughts and feelings. I feel that we have the same goals, dreams, and motivations in life. Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.
*
There's only one thing in this world that's worth having--LOVE! You love somebody, and somebody loves you. John, I can promise you, that there is no one else in the world who I would rather be with. There is only you! You mean the WORLD to me. The best thing to hold onto in this world is each other.
*
I love you for the way you treat me. You make me feel like a Princess. I love that you are very gentle and soft with me. I love that you are protective, and watch out for me. I love that you are understanding of my feelings, whether happy or sad. You make me feel that I am very special person. I know that you would do anything in the world for me. You have given me everything that I could ever want or need. And even more.
*
And of course, I love your intelligence, cause you were SMART enough to fall in love with me. You are a very smart man, very much like your dad. I love how you are eager to learn all you can, and apply things in our lives. Falling in love is the beginning of all wisdom, all sympathy, all compassion, all art, all religion, and is the only thing in life worth learning.
*
I love that I can be myself when I am with you. I like that I don't have to try and be someone I am not with you. That I can be myself, and that you will love me anyway. There is comfort, and I feel safe when I am with you. I like that I can tell you anything. That I don't have to weigh my thoughts, or measure my words, but that I can just pour them out to you with no worries. The most fulfilling gift of life itself is to know that we are loved unconditionally.
*
Real loves stories have no ending. My dream.......is to fall in love with you over and over again. To have a fabulous life adventure with you, and no other. It doesn't matter where we go, what we do, or how much we have, I just know I want to be with you. My dream is to be with you for the rest of this life. Even better then gold; the best is to be sweethearts with whom we can grow old with. I dream of continuing our love through out the eternities. I dream of only being with you in our castle above. I dream of the many children we will have together. Of the joy and the tears we will share. Just the two of us. Of the smiles and the laughter we will still share together. I dream of dancing with you forever. Your love is a dream come true for me. Love is the best feeling we can have in this world, and I am happy to have yours. Love will be Love's reward in Heaven.
*
Why do I love you
I love you for so many reasons.
Big and small
And all of them are wonderful.
*
I love you for all the special qualities
That make you one of a kind...
The only one in the world for me.
*
I love you for the things you do,
That bring such special meaning to my life.
I love you for the silent times
When your eyes and arms tell me all I want to know.
*
I love you just because I do!!
*
"You are my beginning and my end, you are my dream and my reality.....
You are the love of my life."

A Day Out

Saturday morning Middie came over fairly early, and took me to spend the day with her. This is the first time I have been away from all the kids and John in 7 months. Pretty strange. I was alright with it until around 2 p.m. and then I was kind of ready to get back to things at the house. It was hard to not think about how things were at home! First thing in the morning we went to an estate auction. I haven't been to one since last year, so it was kind of fun. Not really the best auction ever, but it was interesting to see how much people would pay for things. We came home with only a few things, they were 5 wool blankets for Shannon's, Joshua's, Cassidy's, Nathan's and Brenna's beds during the winter. They are excited about that. Then she took me to lunch--I got to eat out!!! I even got fries, and made fry sauce--mmmmm! After, we went to the mall and found Christmas presents for the girls. They will absolutely love them. Then back to Middie's house to wrap them up. Good news also, Middie is letting me store the Santa gifts at her house--that is a relief because I was wondering where to hide them here with 13 kids around. As soon as I got back home, the power went off. We lit the candles and the oil lamps. John played banjo, and Elijah the piano as we all sat around an listened. The kids love it when the power goes out, they enjoy the bonding time together and realize how much electricity plays a role in their modern lives. All in all, it was a good day. And I am happy to be back home! Oh, and girl's got their new winter coats in the mail today--totally cute! Power was out for 17 hours--Yuck!!

Another Day in Paradise

Today started out very early. I had an appointment in Concord (2 hours away) to schedule Brenna's up coming dental work. After Brenna's appointment, I took her out to lunch. I am pretty sure she enjoyed the one on one time. We try our hardest to give each kid one on one time with us alone at least twice a month. This helps us to know how everyone is doing. We enjoy it as much as the kids do. Brenna also got in good nap on the way home. Once home, we spent the afternoon outside getting a few things done, that are still needing to be done. The kids had fun playing after, and enjoying the 54 degree weather. Not many warm sunny days left. So I get them out when I can. It is suppose to rain again tomorrow afternoon.....anyone want it? We still have a few puddles from the last rain!! The kids had fun tonight, after John got home, making pyramids. They want me and John to join in, then we would form the perfect pyramid. But them we would need someone to put Brenna on top, and take the picture. So I don't think it will happen. Right as we were about to go in the house, we spied 3 moose in our yard. We ran to get the camera and get a picture, but moose and 13 excited kids don't mix. Those moose were out of here pretty fast. But it was fun to see. Everything else is going great!

Jacob's Happy 8th Birthday

Jacob's Birthday is actually tomorrow, but tonight was the only night John was home, so we decided to celebrate tonight. Jacob picked his birthday dinner of chicken drumsticks and mac and cheese. I was a whanny, and went to Walmart and bought his cake...I feel bad, but school was extra long today, and I ran out of time. Grandpa Frank, and Grandma Middie came over for cake, and they brought the ice cream (chocolate of course!) Middie also brought all the kids a birthday gift over, they had to all give her a hug in order to get it. Thank you Middie and Frank!!Jacob then enjoyed opening his gifts. He got 2 pairs of much needed pajamas, as he has been wearing jeans to bed. He got a Lego set, a coloring set, his favorite candy, reading books, and a game to play with the whole family. Tonight is his night to stay up and enjoy his gifts. Jacobs favorite gift was the candy of course. And now, as is tradition on your 8th birthday, he gets to make a plaster mold of his hand print to put on the shelf with the older kids. Jacob is officially able to stay up after the little kids go to bed for an hour longer now also. Becoming 8 is a giant step in our house--so many more privileges. Jacob definitely feels all grown up now. He is anxious to now be baptized which his dad will do in the next couple of weeks. Oh, and don't forget the exciting thing of about becoming a boy scout.

Very Long Weekend

We had an extra long weekend of splitting firewood. I am so sick of firewood; I think the girls are too. The boys were happy and content to be able to use the splitting machine--it made them happy just to hear the engine run. We split the 4 cords of firewood that Brett had gathered for us, and an extra cord of wood that me and the kids gathered from down the road after a windstorm blew over a large tree. Then we had 5 trees down in upper field that John cut, and the rest of us split and gathered, which came to another 2 cords. Then there was a large birch tree over at the neighbors that we cut, split and gathered which was another cord. So altogether now we have stacked in the garage is a total of 11 cords. Our goal was 12 which was counting 2 cords for maple syrup.......so we have enough now to heat the entire house by wood alone for the winter. Cassidy thinks it is kind of alot of work to just burn it all up so fast. One day she will understand the money part of it all. I just remind her that because of all of our work, we will all be warm this winter. We all enjoyed working towards the same goal though and being together. Oh, and there's more...the kids all decided that they wanted to do something nice for the neighbors. They had 2 cords of wood that needed to be split also, and since they are only here one weekend out of each month, the kids wanted to split and stack it up by the back door for them. So that's exactly what we did. They were very proud of themselves, and are anxious for the neighbors to come and be surprised.

A Week with Dad

For those of you who have been watching for pictures of Brett and his kids, a few are finally here. I had to get my house back in order first before I could justify sitting around. I had kind of let things slide a bit with the house while Brett was here. I tried to relax and let the kids just be able to spend time with their Dad. Shannon, Joshua, Cassidy, Nathan, and Brenna want their dad to know how much they enjoyed him coming, and playing with them. They had a wonderful visit together; already looking forward to the next. I also enjoyed having my lil' brother here. This is the first time I think I have actually spent a quality amount of time with him. I have always in my mind pictured him as a 14 year old kid--since that was the last time I was really around him much. It was so nice to get to know him and his personality. He is a very fun person to be around; tends to be a little quiet at first, but his true self eventually comes out. This is for you Brett--remember these were happy times!

More Leaves

This is for Mandy! She wanted a longer leaves video, so here it is. This was so way fun!! And we only used a smigen' of the leaves--we could make it so big one day, and loose all 27 grandkids. Now there's an idea for an afternoon. Below is my still action photo series, it shows the whole fun process of how to loose your kids.......well all but one that is. Sam wasn't ready yet, so he threw a fit and didn't join in.

Fall Leaves and Square Dancing

The kids spent their last day with their dad making and playing in the biggest leaf pile I have ever seen. It was so fun to watch them go in, and struggle a bit to come out.

Tuesday nights are our Square Dancing night. Me, John, Elijah, Zachery, Caleb, Shannon, Hannah, and Joshua are part of the Conneticut Valley Swingers Club. Do you realize we alone have enough people to make a complete square, that is if one of the boys were to dance the girls part. Me and John actually graduated in May to Main Class. As for the kids they are the new beginners this year, and will graduate in May. Al Monty is our instructor, he is excellent with the kids, and we all love him. The kids have been dancing for about 6 weeks now. They are actually picking up on the calls quite quickly. They were invited to attend their first real official square dance on November 14th. The boys are anxious to put on their boots and western shirts for this. And as for the girls, they can't hardly wait to put on their skirts with pettipants, and petticoats underneath. Should be pretty fun....anyone want to babysit the other 7?

Joshua's Happy Birthday

Friday we hung up the Birthday flag outside to celebrate Joshua's 11th Birthday. We spent the morning chasing Jacob ram sheep around a field trying to catch one to bring home. We definately got our exercise in, and managed to bring home the smallest of the bunch. They are a very lively bunch of sheep--he might just end up in the freezer yet. They kids spent the rest of the day playing and exploring in the woods. After coming inside and cleaning up, Josh received a phone call from his mom, which he grinned from ear to ear about, wishing him a Happy Birthday. Joshua then quickly quizzed me, to make sure everything was in place. Pizza, Rootbeer, Cake, Presents?? I gave him the thumbs up, and the celebration began. We ate Pizza, Chips & Dip, and Rootbeer for his Birthday Dinner; his choice. This led to the long awaited time of opening the presents. I would say his favorite gift was a tie between his MP4 player and the cool basketball shoes, which coincidentally matched the basketball outfit. Wednesday he will be the coolest player there, everyone will want him on their team! Joshua received lost of hugs, and enjoyed the rest of the night checking out his gifts. In our house, Birthday kids get to stay up an hour later then the rest--so he felt pretty special.
